After years of perfecting his talent and developing his craft while working with skilled artists and musicians, the elements of R&B, Soul, Hip Hop, Jazz Fusion and Funk would intertwine to make history. Jah would help to propel a young genre of music, dubbed “Neo Soul” by music industry entrepreneur Kedar Massenburg, to mainstream notoriety and main stay.
Jah Born “Sample Samurai”
Jah Born is a Dallas, Texas bred producer with Brooklyn, N.Y. roots. Growing up with music all around him, it wouldn’t take long for it to settle in his bones. At the age of 13, he discovered his passion for beat smithing while learning from the creative wisdom of mentor and Dallas Hip Hop legend, DJ Baby G (former member of Mad Flava).
In 1997 Jah Born produced a song called “On and On”,
for friend and Dallas native artist Erykah Badu’s debut album Baduizm. This game changing song opened a new lane in the industry earning him 2 Grammy Awards in 1998 and Erykah Badu a Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. “On and On” would go on to earn triple platinum status, and rank in The 100 Best Singles of the 1990s.
Now a playlist must, ”On and On” would serve to ignite the careers of these two close friends and solidify Badu’s place as “The Queen of Neo Soul”, not to mention putting Dallas on the A-list map of influential music artists. In the widely recited lyrics, Badu would spit the line, “Mad props to the god Jah Born,” which forever immortalized a nod of respect and gained the Dallas-based producer household familiarity around the world.
This was just the beginning for the young “Sample Samurai”.
Jah Born would go on to produce multiple tracks with Badu including “And On” (Mama’s Gun), “Your Loving Me”, “Jump up in the Air & Stay There” (Erykah Badu / Lil’ Wayne) and RC & The Gritz featuring Erykah Badu “Leave Me Alone”.
Over the span of his career, Jah has worked with numerous world renowned artists including Rza, Will Smith, Lil Wayne, Snoop Dogg, Raheem DeVaughn, Ice Cube, Scarface, Bilal, Paul Wall, Tela, MC Ren, D.O.C., Chino XL, Raskass, Rah Digga, and more. The list of course includes many of Jah’s favorite producers, great talents such as RC Williams, Jordache V. Grant, Symbolic One, Shaun Martin, Picnictyme, Mic Most, Mr. Lee, 9th Wonder, and Tony “CommonFolk” Ballard.
Super Producer Jah Born is now a part of two ground-breaking Dallas based eclectic Hip Hop Bands: RC & The Gritz and The Cannabinoids. Formed in 2006 – RC & The Gritz were the official band for the 2010-2011 seasons of one of the most innovative and valuable franchises in NBA history, the Dallas Mavericks. This brilliant musical collective lit up the pre-game energy at every home game through the 2011 season and championship playoffs. The Gritz have also received multiple nominations and wins for “Best Band” awards from the, widely known for everything Dallas-Fort Worth culture & news, Dallas Observer.
Jah is the drum machinist for the electro experimental hip hop band, “The Cannabinoids”, constructed by Erykah Badu. The Cannabinoids (#Noids) are a collective of gifted and accomplished producers sharing a stage with a setup comprised of laptops, turntables, keyboards, performing at venues across North America, from the west to the east coast and Japan.
In 2015 Jah Born and fellow Super-Producer Da Dreak formed the Collective
“Black Scientist”.
These two beat mechanics share a friendship and a passion for the craft, assembling beats and manifesting a vision of producing for a selection of talented artists, and releasing their own brand of essential “Beat Tapes”.
Jah Born is also the founder and member of “Tha Beatitudes” – a raw hip hop band that was tapped to be Rza’s (Wu Tang Clan) stage band from 2016-2018. This would also be the start of his current work with an upcoming super-talent out of Dallas, TX, an artist by the name of Flower Child.
